Following the success of the dancing at our special GDL 60th anniversary Glammies last year, we decided to keep the revised format for this year - and once again, it worked a treat!
Around 150 people arrived at our new venue, The Electricity Club, on 17th May, in all their finery, for the annual overview and celebration of the best of amateur theatre in Glamorgan. The competition was once again fierce, especially in the adult section, with 11 strong productions in the field. Also, unsually, there were more entries in the youth drama section than in the musicals this year: the first time that has ever happened.
Below you'll find all the award winners, shortlisted and nominated individuals from the Youth Glammies. Click here for the shortlists/winners of the adult categories.
The shortlists and winners of the acting awards are here.
Other, non-acting awards are here.
This is where you can see all the people on the longlist for the acting awards.
Lots of wonderful talent. Well done everyone.
The photogallery of the night is available.
We started with the usual big singing and dancing numbers, but this year, the opening company was newcomers STARS Performing Arts from Cardiff, who performed exceprts from their production Romeo and Juliet, recently seen at the One-Act Festival in Swansea. They also performed a number from their forthcoming entry Alice in StarsLand, which they will be entering in next year's Glammies. Then, a series of songs from regulars The Unknown Theatre Company, who gave some rousing numbers from their Glammies musical entry Return to the Forbidden Planet.
There were the usual awards, following overview speeches from Youth Moderator, Teri McCarthy and Adult Moderator, Lon David, and once again the whole evening was held together by anecdote and good humour from friend of the GDL, actor and playwright Greg Ashton. We tried another experiment this year: mixing up youth and adult awards together, so that all the acting awards were together, Best Production etc. This worked to great effect, and kept everyone focussed (and listening!) right the way through to the end.
The dancing, as mentioned, once again provided a super way to end the evening, and this time, the band had a singer: Andrew Machin of The Unknown Theatre Company, fresh from receiving his award as Best Actor in a Youth Drama.
All went smoothly technically this time (which is not to be sniffed at, in the light of recent years), even if the floor was rather slippery and the steps to the stage had a life of their own! But no-one fell over, and we all made it through to the end of the night in one piece. Many thanks are due to Andrew Merrell and Sam from Swansea Little Theatre, who worked so hard to make all look so easy. Thanks too to the allegedly retired Geoff and Barbara Lake, who did so much behind the scenes organisation - again - to make the evening happen in the first place.
The only downside to the evening was the miscalculation of the buffet: for the first time this year, we bought in the buffet, rather than making it ourselves, and it ran out about 30 people before the end. Some very miserable - and hungry - faces at the end of the evening. But this was the main lesson there was to be learned from being in our new venue, and we'll be sure to have it right for next time!
Their contribution made a great difference to the evening, and we are really grateful for their support. |
